Union Pacific's Caliente Subdivision [Las Vegas NV to Milford UT]
(Originally released in 2020)
Union Pacific’s Caliente Subdivision etches a course across the arid deserts and deep canyons of the American Southwest. It is the centerpiece of UP’s Los Angeles & Salt Lake Route running 240 miles between Las Vegas, Nevada and Milford, Utah.
This is a solitary route winding through a remote country that has changed little since the rails were laid in the early 1900’s. Modern high-horsepower diesels pull twelve thousand foot stack trains past the bleached bones of old ghost towns nearly forgotten. Sheer canyon walls echo the deep bark of GE’s and throb of EMD’s lugging loads of coal, autos, iron ore, containers, trailers, and mixed freight.

Hi Aaron my name is Shane I've collected a lot of you DVDs of train programs and watched them ever since I was about 10 years old I think and I know you only film train programs in the western half of the US so I have a question are you gonna travel to Sand Patch Grade and hopefully make a program on CSX's Keystone Subdivision cuz CSX is my most favorite railroad cuz of it's paint scheme which is my favorite color blue even though it doesn't run through my home state of California I would love to see it if you make a RUclips video documentary about it cuz I've decided to stop collecting your DVDs since I've got too much in my DVD shelf hahaha so please can you make a video for Sand Patch Grade which is in Maryland?
Another outstanding video!
Do you know why those tunnels are so wide? Is it maybe to allow maintenance vehicles to move thru also or is was it for potential double tracking?
FYI, The ie in Clatskanie is pronounced eye, not ee. I live next to P&W's Portland to Wauna line which would be cool if you did a documentary on it.
Please do the Nevada Sub from Reno to SLC!
I discovered marias pass through a game called Trainz, Route was built by Josef pav And now i am loving it!! Wish i could travel IRL in empire builder on this route.

Nice footage from the frozen tundra! As always, great video content and hope to see y'all this summer catching UP 4014 out on Donner Pass!
The best part of part two was Bailey yards personally I never anything about this place really enjoyed this series
Thank you very Much! This movie brough a sweet memories of the time I spent in Oregon State.
As always, a great video with great history and information. You really stand out by narrating all aspects of the railroad you're filming from town history, history of the RR and any unique info on locomotives, and taking a moment to showcase an industry that works with the railroad (in this case, logging) was unique and I encourage more of that. I find films on shorelines and regionals so interesting and a nice change of pace from the typical focus on the class 1's. Will you be considering the WLE for future films?
If you visit Portland again, make sure you’re able to make it to the Columbia River Gorge Model Railroad club layout. It’s a few blocks away from the Steel Bridge and has a huge HO layout based in the Gorge area. It’s in an old freight depot and has open visits during the winter holidays. I’m sure they’d let you come anytime though if you contacted them! But as always, wonderful video!
See also the song: "Life's Railway To Heaven"!
Oh so many cutie pie names for trains. I thought it was just a train🤷 what the heck is ,manifest🤦
Show
Drone footage is a great addition! Beautiful country!
I like train videos on RUclips 👍
Love it, though there's no such as Kingman Canyon. Part of that is Sawmill Canyon and the other Boxwood canyon. Also it's not that cactusy. You also missed out on filming the BNSF local coming into town and the former SP switchers at the industrial yard that interchange with the mainline.
Thanks for the corrections and info. It's cactusy to this Oregon boy who grew up with Doug Fir and blackberries everywhere.
Watching minute 55, 30 miles per hour is almost our maximum speed here with the general freight train (manifest for you there) which is 50 km/h, we are very late, you see.
Wait, the greens predicted the end of snow twenty years ago. We still have snow?
40:56 ah, you found the War-pumpkin.
BNSF#9615 working hard as a DPU leaving Donkey Creek 😊 BTW - Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 ❤ PS - Yes I did spot BNSF#9615 @ "28:03" on the second occasion in the number 1 of 3 trailing dpu's at the rear. 👌 PS2 - Incidentally it was BNSF#9315 @ "26:42" the number 2 lead position same consist 😊 between the flashing simultaneous sìgnals either side of the tracks 🚦🚦 Love that triple track curve @ "30:39" ❤
That's the OUTS1.
So why not go west out of Vegas? The Cima sub is boring but the hill I traverse is 2% and nothing to shake a stick at. I'm a West end pool engineer so I don't goto milford. That trip is way to long for me
Will do it soon.
47:40 That's a freaking AC6000 man... I love it
top.
Thanks for the Vid, thru my backyard. I live in Logandale NV and see the Mead Lake train daily from my kitchen window. I also have a vacation property in Caliente. Depending how adventurous l feel, l can take 3 different routes between the 2 properties, ranging from difficult, following the trax from Moapa. Carp Elgin Rd is more moderate, and the easy way on Hwy 93 to Kane Spr Rd.
I know the fact that, Amtrak’s Desert Wind ran on this route before it was discontinued.
Yes, and I made a round-trip Pomona to Milford.
Thanks for taking us places that we will never see!.
Around 1:00:26 (and before), the train going through the mountains looks like a toy train.
There are probably other poorly maintained tracks in this country, but I’m glad hazardous materials aren’t being transported on the Toledo branch. It’s probably a challenge for this outfit to turn a decent profit.
The NWP pulled out of western Marin and Sonoma County (north of SF) in the 1930's. Having hiked some of the more obscure portions of the former ROW, I imagine this is how the trains would run if the lines were still active.
Waow Amazing
There's some really good Quail hunting all the way from the start of Meadow Valley wash through Rainbow Canyon. There's also some really big Mule Deer in the area too.
Very true! Saw several really nice bucks. Turkeys too.
Today we are in Part 2 of the San Pedro and Salt Lake video series last time was the Cima Sub from Barstow to Jean this time it is Rainbow Canyon the Caliente Sub from Vegas to the Utah Stateline and on to Milford Yard where it connects to the Lamington and Sharp Subdivision, Lynndyl Subdivision, and Shafter Subdivision which head towards Salt Lake.
Another outstanding 7IDEA video! But I need to get myself back to the list of videos in the forests of the Pacific 🌧🌲 Northwest and out of the desert.
Another Top Production!! best anywhere!
es ist immer wieder Geil diese amerikanischen Züge zu sehen. genial!!!! Thanks
Wow, you really do spoil us with these productions! Can't descirbe how much I enjoy these, thank you Aaron and everyone else at 7idea!
It's always a great day to see a new 7idea video. Learning so much about trains & the beautiful landscapes they traverse is awesome. Wish we could ride in the engine/cab. Thanks to all at 7idea production!
Thank you for watching!
Wish we could ride in the cab as well, unfortunately that's pretty much impossible to do on a class 1 since 9/11
thank you
Great video and thanks for posting as I am going out there next week. Do the manned helpers cut off as the train is moving like they do at Crawford Hill? Are all of the BNSF coal trains utilizing manned helpers or just certain ones?
I find myself eagerly awaiting each new production. Keep them coming 😊
As a kid we lived next to the train tracks...I would time my sleep for the 10pm and 12am trains...the sound of the wheels on rails "click clack" put me too sleep...as I'm watching this now, I feel like a kid!! Thanks for the great content..time for a nap😂😂
all your productions are of the highest quality, thanks for sharing, I really enjoy watching them. The narrator has a fantastic voice. Well done at every level,.
I agree to everything you said

Really enjoyed the overhead look or drone part of filming very interesting part of the world thanks
My heart is pounding when I hear the engine of the train.🇰🇷👍
